Rabbi Eliyahu HaKohen HaItmari (circa. 1659-1729) was a Dayan and Kabbalist and was among Izmir’s leading sages. He is renowned for his work, Shevet HaMussar. After Shabtai Zvi forsake Judaism, Rabbi Eliyhua was a vocal opponent against the Sabbateans. Despite this, Gershom Shalom opines that Rabbi Eliyahu’s writings display leanings to a belief in Shabtai Zvi as the Mashiach. Rabbi Eliyahu was a prolific author, his writings predominantly on ethics, Medrash and commentaries on Tanach.
Izmir, 1863-1864.
