2 Treasures from the Barons Rothschild- - The personal Machzor of the father of the famous 'Nadiv' & an historical medal. 1. Bronze Medal from The Israelite Central Consistory of Paris, to Its President, Baron Gustave de Rothschild. 1902.  Rare and historical medal, a token of gratitude from the Israelite Central Consistory of Paris to its president, Baron Gustave de Rothschild, the brother of Edmond de Rothschild (1845-1934), also known as The Baron Rothschild or Hanadiv Hayadu'a.  Gustave Samuel James de Rothschild, Baron de Rothschild (17 February 1829 in Paris – 28 November 1911 in Paris) , was a French banker and scion of the French branch of the Rothschild family. He was the second son of James Mayer de Rothschild and Betty Salomon von Rothschild (of the German branch of the same family). In accordance with Rothschild tradition, Gustave was expected to marry a cousin, and his family hoped that he would propose to one of his cousins, Mathilde von Rothschild or Evelina de Rothschild. Instead, in 1859, Gustave married Cécile Anspach, the daughter of a high official in the Court of Cassation.  On the obverse of the medal - written in French: The Israelite Central Consistory of  the District of Paris to Its President Mr. Baron Gustave de Rothschild - Grateful Tribute 1852-1902.  On the reverse of the medal - engraved on its circumference are the French words: Country-Religion with the Hebrew words  ה' אחד above a Shofar between them. Beneath them: the Tablets of the Law at the peak of Mount Sinai. Beneath it: a star-of-David on branches. Written in French around it: G-d Protect France. Signed: Stern 1895. Beneath, in French and Hebrew: Leil 14 Nissan, Leil Shimurim.  Date: 1902.  Metal: Bronze. Diameter: 39.5 mm.  Weight: 145.18 gr.  The medal is preserved its matching, original case.  2. Machzor according to Ashkenaz custom, for the second day of Rosh Hashana. Printed by the elucidator and translator Wolf Heidenheim, Roedelheim 1815. Hebrew and Yiddish. Original, leather binding with gold embossing and gilt-edged pages. On the front cover appears in gold lettering: “Baron James van Rothschild”. On the Machzor’s last page appears an ink stamp: E. Lubetski, from the Collection of author of the book, ‘Building a Judaica Library Collection’. Baron James da Rothschild was a prominent Jewish banker . He was the founding father of the French Rothschild dynasty, and father of the famed philanthropist Edmond Rothschild. Baron James served as financial advisors of two French monarchs. This earned him a reputation as the strongest banker in the entire country. Following Napolean’s war, through financing and establishing railroads and the mining industry, Rothschild’s banking position played a pivotal role in transforming France into an industrial empire. The fortune he amassed earned him a place of distinction among the richest and most influential figures of that time. The town Zichron Yaakov is named for Baron James, as is the famed Churva synagogue which is named ‘Beit Yaakov’, due to his financing. Personal item of the prominent Rothschild family.
