Sefer Yesod: Novellae on Masechet Yom Tov and Yevamot. Basel 1599. First Edition - Exceedingly Valuable and Rare- The First Book Authored by the MaHarshah. Rabbi Shmuel Edeles’ unique commentary on Shas, including novellae on tractates Beitzah and Yevamot. Includes some of Rabbi Baruch of Mainz’s novellae. He authored Sefer Terumot on the second chapter of Bava Batra. This is the first complete book of the MaHarsha to be printed during his lifetime, at the behest of his disciples. It was printed anonymously. The book is structured according to the order that the MaHashah studied the tractates in his Yeshiva. This rare book was preceded by a small, 6-leaf booklet, printed in Prague, 1598 that included novellae on tractate Yevamot, Dapim 2-13. The book’s printing took over 30 years, until it finally amalgamated in one complete book. It morphed into an inseparable part of Gemarot and is printed in all standard editions of the Talmud. Rabbi Shmuel Eliezer son of Rabbi Yehudah Edeles (The MaHarshah) was a leading sage and commentator on the Talmud. He was born near to Cracow in 1555. He passed away in Ostrog in 1632. From a young age Rabbi Shmuel Eliezer was recognized for his outstanding talents and genius as well as studiousness. Rabbi Shmuel Eliezer’s father was an eminent Torah scholar, and both his parents were scions of Rabbinical families. His mother, Gittel was the MaHaral of Prague’s cousin, and his father was a direct descendant of Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid Basel, 1599. 50 leaves. Good condition. Upper margins restored.
