Prestigious Set of Cups for Sabbath by the Master-Artist Gerald Benney. London 1979 - The silversmith Gerald Benney was one of the most influential figures in his field during the second half of the 20th century. He was the first British craftsman to ever hold four Royal Warrants at the same time  Gerlad Benney was born in Hull, Eastern Yorkshire in 1930. Benney's career lasted for more than half a century. The clean and minimalist curves of modern Scandinavian design influenced his early work, as indicated by his design of the silverware for which he received the Prince of Wales Scholarship (1952). His wider influence derived from his work as an art consultant of Viners of Sheffield (1957-69). In 1974, Benney was given the first of a series of Royal Warrants as a silversmith. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1995 New Year Honours, ”for services to art”.  This is an impressive and quality set made by Benney, which was used as a set of  cups for Sabbath. The set includes an oval silver tray, six small identical cups and a central cup with the Hebrew inscription ”Zachor et Yom Hashabbat Lekadsho” on it.  Important and prestigious collectible by the master-artist Gerlad Benney.  Provenance: The Bloch Family Collection, Melbourne-Australia.
