Silver Kiddush Cup by the Important Artist David Heinz Gumbel. Germany ca. 1930 - Hallmarked by the Gumbel & Co. workshop in Heilbronn, Germany.  The workshop in Heilbronn dates back to 1868. When its Jewish owner Gumbel immigrated to Jerusalem, the place was transferred to the Bruckmann Company.  David Heinz Gumbel: an Israeli Jeweler and designer, one of the first and most important designers of modern Judaica. Was born in Germany in 1906 to a non-orthodox Jewish family that produced hardware and silverware. In the 1920s, he studied silversmithing at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Arts and Crafts) of Charlottenburg, Berlin. In 1936, Gumbel immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and joined the Bezalel Academy as a teacher and head of the Metal Department alongside his friend, Yehuda Wolpert.  Fine, stylish hammer work. A star-of-David is engraved in the center of the cup. David Gumbel alongside his friend Yehuda Ludwig Wolpert transformed the traditional design of Judaica items. With their students at Bezalel, they made Judaica items, jewelry and silverware inspired by the Bauhaus school of design - clean of elaborate decorations, original, functional and innovative, with modernist, flowing curves. A quality, important modern wotk of Jewish art.
