'Jews Before Solomon's Wall'. Alexandre Bida (1813-1895) - Large and important print depcting Jews praying before the Wall, standing or kneeling. The artist, Alexandre Bida, paid much attention to clothing items and facial expressions. The importance of the moment is emphasized by the deliberate use of monochrome. Alexandre Bida (1813-1895) was a painter-engraver from Toulouse who studied under Eugène Delacroix. At the age of 30, he went on a long trip to Greece, Turkey and Syria. His Orientalist sketches (then fashionable) made him one of the leading representatives of this style, with his distinctive use of monochrome. Additional trips took him to Egypt and later the Holy Land. He became known for his exhibitions during the years 1847-1861. In addiiton, he was an illustrator of the Bible.
