Modern Art: Monumental Spice Tower from the Workshop of Shuki Freiman. Jerusalem, ca. 1900 - A magnificent piece of Judaica, nearly 60 cm tall, impressive in both its unusual dimensions, elegant design. This exquisite silver spice tower, designed by Jerusalem artist Shuki Freiman, is actually a Havdalah set, concealing in its center two silver vessels for holding the Havdalah candle and spices. The spice tower was designed and created in a very unusual size, and was executed in high-quality casting work, dominated by silver-filigree wires. Its form and decoration were inspired by antique spice containers from the 17th and 18th centuries, which were, in turn, inspired by medieval European architectural structures. Like its predecessors, Freiman's multi-level tower incorporates archways, columns, balustrades, bells, and numerous waving flags. The abundance of filigree and gilding lends this spice tower a grandeur that is rarely paralleled. Shuki Freiman, a well-known Israeli Jewish artist, is a seventh-generation Jerusalemite.
