Printed for the first time with glosses by Maharar Isserlein, author of Terumat HaDeshen, and the commentary Mavo She’arim by Rabbi Natan bar Shimshon z”l Shapira, Av Beit Din of Horodna and grandfather of the author of Megaleh Amukot. The book Shaarei Dura was accepted already by the later of the early authorities as a definitive halachic work, and they relied on it as one of the great early sages, to the extent that the Gaon Maharshal established: “And in most cases, we rule like Shaarei” (Yam Shel Shlomo, Chullin ch. 8, sec. 70). The importance of Mavo She’arim lies not only in its deep and comprehensive commentary on Shaarei Dura, but also in its halachic rulings and the customs of “the lands of Poland, Russia, Lithuania, and Ashkenaz” brought in the book. Rabbi Natan son of Rabbi Shimshon Shapira – the Maharnash, author of Mavo She’arim and Imrei Shefer: was one of the great sages of his generation, a contemporary and associate of Rabbi Shachna of Lublin, the teacher of the Rema. His grandson, named after him, was Rabbi Natan Shapira, author of Megaleh Amukot (born 1585–died 1633). He published his great work Mavo She’arim on Shaarei Dura in his advanced old age, and it was edited by his students: Rabbi David Darshan, who edited up to the fifth gate, and from the fifth gate onward… edited by two associates… Rabbi Yitzchak bar Avraham known as Mitz ztz”l from the holy community of Kremenitz… Rabbi Binyamin Shmuel son of the holy Rabbi Avraham.
