Ibbur Shanim (Tikkun Yissachar) – Venice 1559 – With Handwritten Annotations Ibbur Shanim (Tikkun Yissachar) presents customs, halachot according to the Jewish calendar of the Spanish and North African exiles, Torah reading schedules, calculation of leap years, and related tables. Authored by Rabbi Yissachar b. Mordechai Soussan Ma’aravi, Venice 1559. The work includes illustrations of six “wheels” used for Jewish calendrical calculations. It was first printed in Constantinople, 1524, by Rabbi Shlomo b. R., without the author’s consent. Dissatisfied with numerous errors, Rabbi Yissachar prepared and oversaw this corrected edition. Notably, the book recounts an incident with the great Rabbi Yosef Karo, author of the Shulchan Aruch, who prayed at Rabbi Yissachar’s home for a brit milah ceremony (p. 57b). It also contains rulings of major contemporaries, including the Radbaz and the Maharlbach, and special tables for births and other calculations. The book features fine handwritten glosses by two scribes, some slightly trimmed, and an elegant eastern-style ownership inscription: “...Tzadok...”. Rabbi Yissachar b. Mordechai Soussan Ma’aravi (c. 1520–c. 1580) was one of the leading sages of Safed during the era of the Beit Yosef and the Ari z”l. Born in Fez, Morocco, he moved to Jerusalem as a young man to study in the yeshiva of Rabbi Levi b. Chaviv (the Ralbach), later relocating to Safed where he led the Western Sephardic community. His rulings are frequently cited by later poskim. Among his lost works is an Arabic translation of the Bible. Good to very good condition, minor stains, professional minor restorations to title page and final leaf. Magnificent, artistic leather binding.
