Passover Haggadah, Manuscript — ”Chukat HaPesach” — Signed by the Early Gaon Rabbi Abraham ibn Azzuz, Author of ”Lechem Abirim”. Passover Haggadah, Chukkat HaPesach (Leil Shimurim), containing two commentaries: ”HaRaMP” — Rabbi Moses Pizati, and ”MaHaRaSH” — Rabbi Solomon Baruch of Greece. The book was copied from the original Salonika edition of 5329 [1569], in the handwriting of the scribe Rabbi Jacob Chaim Walid [?] of Fez, in the year ”ShYLH” = 5345 [1585], for Rabbi Abraham ibn Azzuz, who also signs his name at the end of the book. It is unclear why the distinguished scribe chose to change the title of the book from Chukat HaPesach to Leil Shimurim. In any case, the scribe explains at the conclusion of the Haggadah that he wrote the book so that it would serve as a favorable remembrance before our master Rabbi Abraham ibn Azzuz. Before us is a copy of an early and important Haggadah — transcribed for the Early Gaon Rabbi Abraham ibn Azzuz — one of the greatest Torah scholars of his generation in Greece, and head of a yeshiva, author of Lehem Abirim on the Talmud — and signed in his holy hand. Signatures of the great luminaries of that era in the land of Greece are exceedingly rare! Throughout the book there are marginal glosses (some trimmed) on the order of the Haggadah, in the handwriting of other writers. The Early Gaon Rabbi Abraham ibn Azzuz Burgel, author of Lehem Abirim (died before 5365 [1605]), was a student of Rabbi Samuel di Modena, the ”MaHaRSHDaM, ” who also cites him with great respect (MaHaRSHDaM, Hoshen Mishpat, responsum 275). He was renowned as a profound scholar; his work Leבhem Abirim contains the novellae developed in his great yeshiva (published by his nephew in Venice, 5365 [1605]). His work is cited by the Maharsha, the Penei Yehoshua, and frequently by the Knesset HaGedolah. Slightly incomplete at the beginning, starting from the middle of the introduction. Condition: fair; tears with some loss of text that is restored; good binding.
