Commentary of Sforno on the Torah – First edition, Venice, 1567. Copy of Rabbi Mordechai Trevish, one of the leading sages of Italy. - Commentary of Rabbeinu Ovadiah Sforno on the Five Books of the Torah, together with his commentaries on the Megillot Kohelet and Shir HaShirim — extremely rare first edition. Rabbeinu Ovadiah Sforno (c. 1470/1475-1550), one of the foremost Torah commentators and leading Italian sages of his generation, renowned both in Torah and secular wisdom, and also a distinguished physician known among his contemporaries as the “Abir HaRof’im” (Prince of Physicians). His commentary on the Torah was accepted throughout the Jewish world and included in editions of Mikra’ot Gedolot across the generations. On the title page, an early ownership inscription: “And from the gift of Nachliel, this book from my brother-in-law, the honorable Wolpin Levi, Mordechai Treves, ” above it another signature: “Ne'um Mordechai.” Additional ownership inscription from the giver of the book: “This book is my personal acquisition, Wolpin Levi.” Further ownership inscriptions appear on the title pages. The book contains numerous censorship deletions; in several places individual words were erased, including references to “shedim” (demons) and similar terms. Venice, 1567.
