“An Early Journey to Jerusalem in 1697” — First French edition [1705], with folding engravings and views of Eretz Yisroel and Syria. - Voyage d'Alep à Jerusalem à Paques en l'année 1697 — An important and fascinating travel account by Henry Maundrell. The work was first published in English in Oxford in 1703. In 1697, Henry Maundrell (1665–1701), chaplain of the Levant Company in Aleppo, embarked on a three-month pilgrimage to Jerusalem in order to participate in the Easter celebrations in the Holy City. In this work, Maundrell describes in detail his journey from Aleppo in Syria to Jerusalem, providing a vivid account of the cities, roads, holy sites, and landscapes he encountered throughout Eretz Yisroel, Syria, and Lebanon. The volume is illustrated with impressive engravings, including an engraved frontispiece and seven additional plates, five of them folding.
