Sefer Yeshayahu (Book of Isaiah), with translation into Greek and Latin, Basel, 1535–1542. Extremely rare. - Sefer Yeshayahu, printed here as a separate work and not as part of a complete Tanach, with the Septuagint Greek translation and Latin translation and commentary. Basel, 1535–1542 [5295–5302]. On each page spread: on the right-hand side, the Hebrew biblical text alongside the Septuagint in Greek; on the facing page, the Latin translation of Jerome together with an additional Latin translation and commentary by Sebastian Münster (1488–1552), including his introduction. The book was printed by Münster himself during his lifetime. According to scholars, Münster printed this edition for use in his private studies with students only; consequently, very few copies were produced—explaining its great rarity. The book is recorded in the Hebrew bibliographical project based on copies in the British Library and the Biblioteca Palatina in Parma. The bibliographer J. Prijs dates the printing to 1542, while the Biblioteca Palatina catalogue records 1535. As the book was not available to some bibliographers, it was mistakenly described as being printed left-to-right, whereas in fact it is printed right-to-left in accordance with Hebrew format. Complete copy, printed on fine paper with wide margins. Collation: [8], 345 pp. 20 cm. A few light stains. Final leaf partially detached from the binding. Very good condition.
