Ketzos HaChoshen Two Volumes. First Edition. Lemberg, 1788–1796. Important Gloss. - Sefer Ketzos HaChoshen, on Shulchan Aruch Choshen Mishpat, Part I and Part II, by the gaon Rabbi Aryeh Leib HaKohen Heller. At the end of the first volume appears Kuntres HaSfeikos by the author’s brother, the gaon Rabbi Yehuda HaKohen (author of Terumas HaKri), who also supervised the printing of the sefer. The first part was printed in 1788, at the press of Rebbetzin Yehudis Rozanis, Lemberg. The second part was printed in 1796, Lemberg. Sefer Ketzos HaChoshen, or in yeshiva parlance — “the Ketzos, ” is regarded as one of the central foundational works in the world of Torah lomdus and among the enduring cornerstones of the yeshiva world. For more than two hundred years, the sefer has served as a foundation stone for analytical Torah study in yeshivos across all circles and in many countries. The work was composed according to the order of Choshen Mishpat in the Shulchan Aruch, from which it derives its title — Ketzos HaChoshen, meaning edges and margins to Choshen Mishpat. On one of the leaves of the sefer, in the work Kuntres HaSfeikos, appears a scholarly handwritten gloss in the margin. At its conclusion is written the word: “the author.” Due to trimming of the leaf affecting the completeness of the annotation, it cannot be determined conclusively whether this is an annotation of the author himself, signed at its conclusion, or whether the word “the author” forms part of the text of the annotation itself.
