Rare and Pedigree Copy. Shever BeMitzrayim. Livorno, 1742. Personal Copy of Rabbi Nachum Berenyu of Sadigura. - Shever BeMitzrayim—  supplications and requests for times of wrath and days of turmoil. Livorno, 5502 [1742]. Copy of the holy Gaon, Rabbi Nachum Ber’enyu of Sadigura. Rare. A rare and unique work documenting the earthquake that struck Livorno in 5502, containing orders of prayer, supplications, and petitions instituted in response to the event. The book was edited by the Gaon Rabbi Raphael Meldola, author of Shu”t Mayim Rabbim, one of the leading rabbis of 18th-century Italy. In the first fifteen leaves is a detailed description of the events and the earthquake as recorded by R. Raphael Meldola himself. Thereafter appear supplications and prayers composed by leading Italian sages, including the Ramaz — R. Moshe Zacuto, R. Yosef Piametta, R. Yosef Giron of Florence, and others. Menachem Nachum Dov Ber (Ber’enyu) of Sadigura (1843–1883): son of Admor R. Shalom Yosef Friedman and grandson of the Ruzhiner Rebbe. He married the daughter of his uncle, the holy Rebbe R. Avraham Yaakov Friedman of Sadigura, and during his father-in-law’s lifetime already led a group of chassidim and was considered a candidate for leadership of the court. He passed away in Av 1883, about one month before the passing of his great uncle, at the age of approximately forty. Rabbi Ber’enyu was renowned for his vast library of approximately four thousand books and manuscripts — among the largest in the Jewish world of his time — and it is said that he could identify his books by touch alone. He used several types of ownership stamps, including “Kinyan Kaspi, ” “Nachalas Avosai, ” and “Minchas Shai, ” indicating purchase, inheritance, or gift. In this book appear two of his well-known stamps: “Nachum Dov Ber Friedman” with a lion emblem at its center, and the stamp “Kinyan Kaspi.” [24] leaves. Fine copy, in its original antique binding.
