At the end of the volume are printed responsa by his grandfather, the gaon Rabbi Yaakov ben Naim, author of Mishkenos Yaakov, and by the gaon Rabbi Aharon Lappa, author of Bnei Aharon. Copy of the gaon Rabbi Chaim Palagi On the title page appears the signature of the gaon Rabbi Chaim Palagi, one of the foremost sages of Izmir and among the leading poskim of the nineteenth century. Due to trimming of the margins, the signature was partially cut, and only the words: “… Palagi S”T” remain. Alongside it appears on the title page the signature of the gaon Rabbi Bechor Yaakov Yaavetz, author of Tzur Yaakov, among the foremost disciples of Rabbi Chaim Palagi. Rabbi Chaim mentions him in several places in his writings with special esteem and refers to him as: “ben no’eh hu li.” Rabbi Chaim Palagi (תקמ”ח–תרכ”ח; 1788–1868) , the renowned Rav of Izmir and among the greatest sages of the East in the nineteenth century, authored dozens of seforim across all fields of Torah literature, approximately eighty of which were printed and accepted throughout the Jewish world. In תקצ”ז [1837] he was appointed Av Beis Din of the Great Beis Din of Izmir, in which dozens of rabbonim and dayonim served. In תרט”ו [1855] he was elevated to the highest office of the Izmir community—the position of Chacham Bashi. Shortly thereafter, his appointment was confirmed by Sultan Abdulmejid I through a royal decree (nishan), granting him broad authority in matters of justice and communal leadership and entrusting him with the leadership of the Jewish community of Izmir.
