Chiddushei MeHaRiven on the Shas. First Edition. Dessau, 1698. - Sefer Beis Yehudah – halachic novellae on eight of the most widely studied tractates of Shas, by the Gaon Rabbi Yehudah of Kalisz, famously known for generations as Maharivan (Moreinu HaRav Rabbi Yehudah ben Nissan). One of the great Torah scholars of Poland and Lithuania in his time. The rabbis of the Vaad Arba Aratzos greatly praised his novellae, writing that they are so extraordinary that “even in the days of Yehoshua bin Nun, the like of them was not stated.” This work, spanning over seven hundred pages, reflects his immense creative power in Torah and his extraordinary diligence. The book was printed by his son, the Gaon Rabbi Avraham, Av Beis Din of Ostrau, a close associate of Rabbi Dovid Oppenheim, Av Beis Din of Nikolsburg. At the beginning of the sefer is printed the pamphlet Moed Dovid on Tractate Shabbos, containing novellae by the Gaon Rabbi Dovid Oppenheim. This marks the first appearance in print of his novellae, and indeed among the earliest publications of his Torah teachings in general. Rabbi Dovid Oppenheim also provided a haskamah to the sefer and assisted in securing the funding required for its printing—a particularly costly undertaking, as noted by the author’s son in the introduction. Minor paper restoration on the title page and repair on the verso, margins of the title page slightly trimmed. Trimming of pages affected some headings and lower text on several leaves. Good condition.
