Shulchan Aruch of the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich, 'The Shamloyer Rav'. With Tens of his Handwritten Glosses. - Shulchan Aruch – Even HaEzer with Be’er Heitev and Pitchei Teshuva – first edition of the Pitchei Teshuva. Johannisburg, 1857–1861. Two volumes. Copy belonging to the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich, Av Beis Din of Shamloy. On the endpaper of the second volume appears a handwritten inscription by his son: “This Shulchan Aruch belongs to my honored father, the Gaon… the kksht, Moreinu HaRav Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich, may he live long, Av Beit Din of Shamloy… yitzav.” The copy contains dozens of handwritten glosses, attesting to its continuous use during his study and teaching. Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich (1863–1944) , author of She’elot U’Teshuvot Lechem Shlomo, was among the leading Hungarian halachic authorities in the generation preceding the Holocaust, and served for decades as rabbi of Shamloy. The great sages of his time regarded him as one of the foremost decisors, and the Chafetz Chaim referred to him as “the mighty Gaon.” Even during the Holocaust he continued to engage in Torah study and publish his novellae with faith and trust, until he was murdered al Kiddush Hashem together with his community in 1944.
