“Zecher L’Machatzis HaShekel” – coins of pure silver, from the holy hands of the Rebbe – Purim 5751 - Three half-dollar coins made of pure silver for the mitzvah of matanos la’evyonim, from the holy hands of the Rebbe. It is a well-established Jewish custom to give three half-coins, corresponding to the three times the term “terumah” appears in Parashas Shekalim. The Rebbe further explained that they correspond to the three days of fasting observed in the days of Esther. From this derives the custom of giving “Zecher L’Machatzis HaShekel” on Ta’anis Esther before Mincha. The meticulous give silver coins, and in the Jewish diaspora and Chabad communities it is customary that the gabbai tzedakah acquires three silver coins on behalf of their value, and the donor gives silver coins for the redemption of his soul, as a remembrance of the half-shekel. Here are three half-dollar coins from 1964, the last year in which pure silver coins were minted. The coins were given by the Rebbe to Rabbi Moshe Groner (of blessed memory), brother of Rabbi Leib Groner, for distribution as matanos la’evyonim on Purim 5751. HaTamim Moshe Groner (12 Cheshvan 5693 – 23 Adar 5759) was a transmitter of traditions (baal shmuah) and one of the devoted attendants of the Rebbe's household (ne'amanei beit rabbeinu). Every year on the holiday of Purim, he had the privilege of serving as the Rebbe's emissary to distribute Matanot L'Evyonim (Purim gifts for the needy) on the Rebbe's behalf.
