First edition of the Gaon of Vilna’s glosses on the Mechilta. Rabbi Yitzchak Eliyahu Landa, brother of the author of Dameseck Eliezer, served as a maggid meisharim in Vilna and authored works on Tanach and the words of Chazal. In his introduction he describes how a copy of the Mechilta came into his possession on whose margins were written glosses in the handwriting of the Gaon of Vilna; from these he transcribed and brought to print the glosses contained in this edition, published here for the first time under the name Ifeh Tzedek. On the title page appears an ownership inscription: “For Hashem is the earth and its fullness, and I was granted this by the humble Jacob, son of my father Zalman Pozna, of blessed memory.” The gaon Rabbi Yaakov Pozna (1732–1849), dayan in Frankfurt am Main and head of the kloiz beis midrash in the city, served on the court of the author of Hafla’ah and later on that of his son, author of Machaneh Levi. He was the son of Rabbi Yekusiel Zalman Pozna, dayan of Offenbach and Av Beis Din of Friedberg, and progenitor of a distinguished rabbinic dynasty that continued in Frankfurt and Ashkenaz communities for generations. After his passing, a severe dispute arose surrounding his funeral, when the communal leadership refused to allow rabbis opposed to Reform to eulogize him in the cemetery. This episode was among the factors leading to the establishment of the independent Orthodox community in Frankfurt under the leadership of the Chasam Sofer’s ideological successors, with the support of Baron Wolf Rothschild.
