2. Song for the crowning of Rabbi Elisha de Fano as the Rav of the Corfu community. Corfu, [1888].
Song in honor of "Rabbi Elisha de Fano Moreh Tzedek of Reggio Emilia... a song of glory based on the acronym "אלישע רועה צאן קדשים פה קורפו" which was sung in the synagogue on the day he was crowned... here in Corfu... on [the day was omitted] of Sivan... 1888... writing on behalf of the community Maimon Ventura...". The song is vowelized. Begins with the words: "אמצו חזקו אחים באו נריע". Printed at the press of Yosef Nachmoli Corfu.
Rabbi Elisha (Alsandro) of Fano (1847-1935): was an Italian Rav who served as Rav of the Jewish communities of Òdena, Urbino, Reggio Emilia and Corfu and as the Chief Rabbi of Milano for approx. 48 years. He started serving as the Rav of Corfu (which was then under the rule of the Venice Republic) in 1888. When the blood libel in Corfu occurred in 1891, he asked the local Bishop to stop the riots in the streets, before these became a pogrom. During the riots, stones were thrown at him through the windows of his home. To commemorate his rescue, the Corfu community used to read Psalms 135 and Psalms 136 when the Heichal was opened during the Minchah prayer on the Sabbath before Easter.
[1] leaf. 35 cm. Good condition. Fold lines. Some stains. Some small tears along the edges.
