The idea of its founding as a Jewish city arose in 1914, when a group of Ahuzat Beit residents, led by Dr. Yehuda Leib Matmon-Cohen, founder of the Herzliya Gymnasium, decided to establish a rural city called "Ir Ganim" based on a garden city approach using
“Hebrew labor”, however it was only realised a year after the establishment of The British Mandate in Eretz Israel in the spring of 1921. During World War I, from November 1917 to September 1918, the garden city was part of the “Ojot” front line between the Ottoman and British forces - at the western end of the front line.
The name of the locality was later changed from "Ir Ganim" to "Ramat Gan". In March 1926, the settlement was recognized as a local council by the British, and after the establishment of the state, in 1950, it was recognized as a city in Israel.
