הספר מלווה 28 לוחות – איורי נופים, אתרים ודמויות מקומיות – וכן שתי מפות מקופלות: מפת נהר הירדן, ומפת ים המלח.
ויליאם פרנסיס לינץ' [1801-1865], קצין בצי האמריקני. ב-1847 יצא למשלחת מחקר לירדן ולים המלח. משלחתו הייתה משלחת המחקר הראשונה שחקרה את האזור הדרומי של ים המלח ולינץ' היה הראשון ששרטט מפה מדויקת ומפורטת של ים המלח והירדן.
הספר כולל 25 פרקים. כל פרק מוקדש לחלק מהמסע, וכולל תיאורים שונים אודות קורות המשלחת.
חיתוכי העץ שבספר צוירו על ידי סגנו ג'ון דייל ואחד מימאי המשלחת, המתארים מקומות, אירועים ואנשים שהיו קשורים במסע.
