(19th Century Militaria) This bronze medal commemorates Admiral George Dewey's historic return to New York City aboard the USS Olympia from September 28-30, 1899, following his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Celebrated with a multi-day event, Dewey's return marked a significant moment of public acclaim. The front features a bust of Dewey with the inscription ”NEW YORK WELCOMES THE HERO” and the dates ”Sept. 28-30, 1899,” while the reverse depicts the USS Olympia with the text ”DEWEY'S FLAG-SHIP RETURNED TO NEW YORK SEP. 28, 1899” and ”OLYMPIA 5800 Tons.” Made of bronze and originally suspended from a pin-back shaped like the Olympia.
