Holland schnapps, also known as traditional Dutch Jenever, refers to potent distilled drinks from Holland, traditionally grain-based. ”Holland Schnapps” was a common English term for jenever in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in American pre-Prohibition bartending guides. The word ”schnapps” itself has German and Dutch roots related to taking a quick drink or gulp. ”Pre-Volstead” refers to the time before the Volstead Act, that enforced Prohibition, became law in the United States on January 17th, 1920. The phrase ”pre-Volstead” is a modern collector's term used to describe and date antique bottles, jugs, and other alcohol-related items as being from the era before the Volstead Act took effect.
