It was a popular piece of decorative kitchenware in the mid-20th century, with the patent applied for in 1945, so production ran mainly from the 1940s through the 1950s. The design is a whimsical, anthropomorphic figural style, featuring a cream-colored cat wearing a hat with a yellow bird or ribbon and a prominent bow tie and boots, often adorned with hand-painted gold or decal details. ”Patented Puss 'n Boots USA” impressed on the underside.
