Donald Teague Saturday Evening Post Watercolor - Item/Description: Original signed watercolor magazine interior by American illustrator, Donald Teague (1897-1991), one of the premier watercolorists of the 20th Century. Teague was a magazine illustrator throughout the 1920s and 1930s, initially for the Saturday Evening Post in New York City and by 1938 for Collier's in California. This work was illustrated by Teague in 1938 for the Saturday Evening Post and used for the October 1, 1938 issue for the short story by Mckinley Kantor called, ” The Noise of Their Wings. ” Unusual in genre and subject matter, it depicts a beautiful woman with bare shoulders and headscarf in earnest discussion with two gentlemen in business attire. Artist signed and dated lower right: Donald Teague 1938. On back an adhesive label with faded type reads: This drawing must not be reproduced for any purpose. Copyrighted by the Curtis Publishing Company. The Saturday Evening Post. There are also hand-written instructions, possibly written by the artist, that read: ”Make girl's slacks bluer than copy.” Teague was born in 1897 in Brooklyn, New York. He was trained at the Art Students League of New York. After his time as a magazine illustrator, he joined the art colony in Carmel-by-the-Sea, where he painted for four decades. By the time of his death at age 94, he had become known as ”the dean of American watercolorists, ” according to The Los Angeles Times. With his wife Verna, Teague had two daughters. He died on December 13, 1991. His work has been exhibited in major museum collections throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Royal Watercolor Society, the Tokyo Museum, the Peking National Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Watercolor in Mexico City, Chicago's Art Institute, the Sydney Museum in Australia, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.
