1914 Erich Heckel 'Sunrise' Woodcut Etching - Item/Description: Framed woodcut print artwork titled ”Sonnenaufgang” (Sunrise) 1914 by the prominent German Expressionist artist Erich Heckel. The artwork is signed and dated on the lower right. The image shows a coastal landscape with a dark sun (sometimes interpreted as both sun and moon simultaneously) hanging above jagged, stylized rock formations. It is a starkly graphic woodcut print that reflects the psychological intensity and simplified compositions characteristic of his early work. Erich Heckel (German, 1883–1970), a co-founder of the influential German Expressionist group Die Brücke (The Bridge). Erich Heckel's work was deeply impacted by the historical context of early 20th-century Germany. During the Nazi regime, his art was labeled ”degenerate, ” resulting in the destruction of his studio and the confiscation of hundreds of his works from public collections.
