Bidspirit auction | Japanese Satsuma Moriage Lidded Vessel
Japanese Satsuma Moriage Lidded Vessel - Item/Description: Japanese Satsuma moriage footed vessel, dating to the Meiji Period, circa 1868-1912. Ornate cream-colored earthenware vessel with characteristic fine crackle glaze. Features elaborate moriage (raised enamel) and heavy gilt detailing throughout. Body decorated with dual hand-painted panels: one depicting geishas in traditional kimono, the reverse featuring floral motifs in blue and yellow. Sculptural elements include a domed lid surmounted by a shishi (foo dog) finial, with matching shishi-form handles at the shoulders. The vessel is elevated on three integrated, curved tripod feet. Underside of lid marked with a three-line mark workshop or painter's mark. Base shows two markings, including the character ”Tsuchi” meaning ”clay” or ”earth.” By marking their pottery ”Tsuchi, ” Japanese artists both identified the specific quality of the raw clay as the craft's essential foundation and honored the wabi-sabi spirit by celebrating the material's innate, earthy connection to the natural world. The secondary mark most likely is the artist's signature or studio name.
