Antique Japanese Satsuma Sake Bottle Vase - Item/Description: Japanese Satsuma sake bottle vase, late Meiji Period, circa 1890-1912. Bulbous earthenware body with a constricted neck and flared rim. Hand-painted with polychrome enamels and moriage detailing. Two large rectangular cartouches feature figural scenes of scholars or immortals in traditional robes within a simplified landscape. The surrounding ground is densely decorated with a gold-enriched brocade aesthetic, featuring complex geometric and floral patterns. The neck is ornamented with vertical panels of shippo (seven treasures) and floral motifs set against a rich iron-red and gilt ground. A classic example of high-relief export ware with characteristic cream-colored crackle glaze. Unmarked. Material: Earthenware Dimensions: Diameter: 7 3/4”; Height: 5 1/2” Condition: Signs of age and wear include surface scratches, scuffing, staining and crazing, rubbing and thinning of glaze and gilding, along with firing flaws and minor fritting to base.
