Antique Japanese Wooden Utility Storage Box - Item/Description: Japanese wooden utility storage box (mokubako) featuring reinforced iron-bound corners and edges, designed for durability in a commercial warehouse or market setting. Late Meiji period, late 1800s. Box features hand-painted traditional Kanji calligraphy in a fluid Sosho (grass script) style. The characters ”virtue” and ”shop” identify the piece as the property of a specific business establishment, acting as a functional brand marking. Historically, these sturdy mokubako were essential commercial tools designed without lids to allow for easy stacking for storage and quick access to inventory in busy shops. Used for the organization of bulk items, such as textiles, merchant tools, or dry goods.
