19th c. Morris County, New Jersey Map Atlases - Item/Description: Pair of original post-Civil War and Gilded Age cartographic reference volumes comprising the 1868 Atlas of Morris Co. New Jersey and the 1887 Robinson's Atlas of Morris County, New Jersey. The 1868 volume, compiled from actual surveys under the direction of Frederick W. ”F.W.” Beers and published by F.W. Beers, A.D. Ellis & G.G. Soule, features intricate typography and represents the very first comprehensive atlas printed for the county. The accompanying 1887 edition, compiled from official records and private plans by Elisha Robinson, showcases distinct Victorian ornamental title lettering. Both lithographed atlases feature incredible geographical specificity, illustrating precise township boundaries, water networks, road configurations, and the explicit footprints of residential homes and properties marked with individual landowner surnames. These foundational documents serve as critical historical and genealogical archives, capturing the rapid industrialization, infrastructural growth, and real estate development of northern New Jersey during the late 19th century.
