Bidspirit auction | 19th Century ”Lady with Lyre”
19th Century ”Lady with Lyre” Ansonia Clock Topper - Item/Description: Neoclassical style cast metal sculptural figure, originally manufactured as a mantel clock topper for the Ansonia Clock Company. Sculpture features a seated female figure resting her head on her hand, with a classical lyre harp resting at her side. Cast from spelter metal and finished with a gold-toned paint. The hollow underside is designed with a contoured edge to fit against a clock case. This specific ”Lady with Lyre” model was designed to fit Ansonia's figural mantel clock lines, such as the ”Pompeii” model, which were popular during the company’s peak production era in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in Connecticut in 1851 before relocating its primary manufacturing facilities to New York in 1878, the Ansonia Clock Company grew into one of the largest clock producers globally.
