Vintage MTA New York City Laminated Subway Maps - Item/Description: Set of eight original vintage 1979 New York City Subway system maps. This specific cartographic design, created by Michael Hertz Associates, famously replaced the abstract, minimalist 1972 Massimo Vignelli diagram by reintroducing geographic accuracy, organic landmasses, and distinct borough coloring to aid consumer navigation. Design replicates the official New York City transit layout introduced in June 1979 to replace the abstract 1972 Vignelli map. Because the map on the placemats displays the JFK Express ”Train to the Plane” route (introduced in 1978) but lacks the major route reconfigurations and line changes implemented by the MTA in late 1985, this set was manufactured during this exact early-1980s window when the Hertz map layout was entirely new to consumers.
