Carved Brazilian Ship Carranca - Signed Severino - Item/Description: Brazilian folk art hand-carved umburana wood carranca, or boat figurehead, signed by Severino. Carranca replicates figureheads once mounted onto the prows of commercial trading boats navigating the Sao Francisco River in Northeast Brazil. Hand-chiseled from a single block of native umburana wood by regional artist, Severino, the zoomorphic visage displays a fierce, scowling expression complete with a broad flared snout, bulging black eyes, and an open mouth showcasing sharply bared teeth and a red-painted tongue. Traditional Brazilian folklore art designed to symbolically ward off river spirits and malevolent forces.
