Victorian English Brass Postal Letter Scale - Item/Description: Antique Edwardian to late Victorian era desktop letter scale is a classic Roberval-type balance mechanism cast in solid brass and mounted to a polished rectangular wooden base. Manufactured in England circa 1900. Design features a decorative openwork heart-shaped central column supporting an articulated crossbeam, a circular pan for stacking counterweights, and a wider square pan intended for holding letters or small parcels. These instruments were a standard staple of British and American commercial offices and private library writing desks following the mid-19th century postal reforms, complete with three circular brass weights nested inside recessed circular bays carved directly into the wooden plinth.
