Nefesh Chayah, responsa and novellae on the Talmud By Rabbi Chaim Elazar Waks Piotrków 1876 – first edition The righteous and eminent Rabbi Chaim Elazar Waks (1822 – 1889) was born in Tarnograd, Poland, in the year 1822, and married the daughter of Rabbi Yosef Halberstam, brother of his teacher, the holy Rebbe of Sanz, author of Divrei Chaim. At the age of eighteen he was appointed rabbi and head of the rabbinical court in Tarnograd, where he established a yeshivah. In 1860 he was crowned rabbi of Kalisz, succeeding the author of Imrei Bina, who had departed for the Land of Israel. In 1866 his first wife passed away, and he remarried, taking as his wife the daughter of the eminent Rabbi Yisrael Yehoshua of Kutno. Because of his struggle against the reformers in his city, he was compelled to relocate to Warsaw, where he remained for some four years, until he was appointed rabbi of Piotrków. The Chafetz Chaim approached him to receive approbation for the Mishnah Berurah. In 1867 he was appointed president of Kollel Poland in the Land of Israel, a position previously held by the Chiddushei HaRim of Ger and the Imrei Bina. He passed away in 1889. The dedication: ” את הספר הזה נתן המחבר לר' חיים בלומן בערג מכולל אונגארין. הוא חותם כרבה של פיעטרקוב”. It appears that he bestowed the book in the course of his journey to the Holy Land in 1886, in connection with the collaboration between Kollel Ungarin and Kollel Poland, which he headed.
