Owners: On the title page appear two signatures of the great and holy Rabbi Shmuel Heller, and throughout the book another ten to fifteen of his signatures at the upper right corner of pages – perhaps marking for himself where he had reached in his learning. The great and holy Rabbi Shmuel Heller ztz״l (1803–1884): Av Beit Din of Safed and leader of the Ashkenazic community in the city for over forty years. A great-grandson of the Tosafot Yom Tov. Born to his father R. Yisrael, shofar-blower for the Chozeh of Lublin. The Chozeh of Lublin placed tefillin upon him when he reached bar mitzvah. R. Shmuel would recount that he had been blessed by the Chozeh more than a hundred times and merited to be with him for the Seder night of Pesach. He immigrated to Eretz Yisroel and settled in Safed, where he became close to his teacher, the holy Rabbi Avraham Dov of Avrutch, author of Bat Ayin, and after his passing filled his place in the rabbinate of the city. Rabbi Shmuel Heller passed away on Tevet 22 1884, at the age of 98, and was buried in the ancient cemetery of Safed. He left behind a son, the great and holy R. Avraham Yitzchak Heller, and three daughters, whose descendants are spread throughout the land. Among his descendants, R. Avraham Yitzchak Kahn, the Rebbe of Toldos Aharon.
