Alexandri Zusslin HaKohen (Razach), one of the great Ashkenazic decisors, studied under the disciples of the Maharam of Rothenburg, the Mordechai, Rabbi Yitzchak of Dura, and others. He was killed al kiddush Hashem in the persecutions of the Black Death, around the year 1340. His sefer HaAgudah presents the halachic conclusions of the sugyot in the Babylonian Talmud, including those not practiced nowadays. Generally, he follows the interpretations and rulings of the Rif, the Baalei HaTosafot, the Maharam of Rothenburg and his students. The decisors of the generations after him in Ashkenaz—the author of Minhagim DeBei Maharam, the Maharil, the Mahari Weil, the Terumat HaDeshen, and others—frequently cited his words, and the Rema relied upon him in his rulings. Rabbi Yosef Katz of Krakow, author of She’eirit Yosef, brother-in-law of the Rema, published it for the first time in Krakow in 1571. Rabbi David Yehuda Freind, author of Pardes David and Alufei Yehuda, son of Rabbi Yisrael Freind, Rabbi of Sassregen. He studied in the yeshiva of R. Yaakov Yechezkel Greenwald in Hunyad and under R. Shaul Brach in Kashau. In 1932 he married the daughter of R. Yechezkel Paneth of Deésh. He was active in Agudas Yisroel in Romania. His father appointed him as the junior rabbi of Sassregen, and he later served as rabbi of the Orthodox community of Transylvanian émigrés in Bucharest. He returned to serve as rabbi in Sassregen and was deported to Auschwitz, where his wife and daughter perished. After the Holocaust he married the sister of the Rebbe of Toldos Aharon, author of Divrei Emunah. He immigrated to Eretz Yisrael, served in the rabbinate in Netanya, and in his later years lived in Jerusalem, where he passed away on the 23rd of Nissan 1985.
