Yalkut Ephraim – Sam Ḥayyim, Jerusalem 1877 — unique edition - Yalkut Ephraim on the Torah and Five Megillot. “Collected from the earlier authors, old and new sayings and midrashim, and I composed this work in the city of Akhizka, I, Ephraim son of my father my master Jacob Ha-Levi Kukia. “And these I add to the earlier ones: the book Sam Ḥayyim. “Jerusalem — printed by Nisan Bak, son of R. Israel z”l, on the printing press of Sir Moses Montefiore” 1877 R. Ephraim b. R. Yaakov Ha-Levi Kukia was born in the Caucasus in 1814. In 1870 he ascended to Jerusalem and was among the heads of the Georgian community. He founded a yeshivah and synagogue named Ohel Yaakov after his father, and supported its students from his own means. The center of Georgian Jewry in Jerusalem stood outside Sha‘ar Shechem opposite the houses of Nisan Bak. He passed away in Jerusalem on 9 Kislev 1890. The first 13 folios are from Sam Ḥayyim, printed by the Sassoon brothers. In the first six pages of the book appears the author’s introduction to Sam Ḥayyim, with its own title page and separate foliation. Sam Ḥayyim — collected pieces, with “stories” at the end, anthologized. New title page. Here too, until folio 13 is from another press with smaller pages. No ownership inscriptions — but many manuscript corrections throughout.
