The “Kuzari” with the Commentary Kol Yehuda”, Zhitomir 1867, Press of A S Shadov – Including a Rare Endorsement by the Admor HaZaken of Sadigura for the Chassid R’ Sheftil of Berdichev - The Book of the Kuzari, authored by Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi, together with the commentary Kol Yehuda by the renowned sage Rabbi Yehuda Moscato of Mantua. Zhitomir 1867, printed by Avraham Shalom Shadov 575 pages 21.5 cm Overall good condition, with stains, signs of use, and some holes with paper repairs on the title page A rare approbation: The Admor HaZaken of Sadigura wrote this approbation with his own hand, not in his usual manner through the attendant who would write at his instruction. The reason lies in the extraordinary stature of the publisher. The gaon and chassid Rabbi Sheftil of Berdichev was among the foremost chassidim already in the days of the holy tzaddik of Ruzhin, in the town of Ruzhin. Teachings and traditions were transmitted in his name, as he had received directly from the Ruzhiner. In later years he was among the most prominent followers of the Ruzhiner's son in Sadigura, together with his friend and companion R’ Dudiyah, author of the work Tehillah LeDavid. He is described by his peers as “a holy man, a descendant of the Shelah HaKadosh, and one of the chassidim who traveled already in the early days to Ruzhin, to the father of the Rebbe in Ruzhin, Russia, and he was of such stature – he could enter the Rebbe's room without needing permission”. Text of the approbation: הנה בא לפני ידידי הנגיד המופלא ו”ח מו' שעפטיל הורוויץ נ”י, ורוצה להעלות על מכבש הדפוס שני ספרים יקרי הערך, האחד הוא ספר היקר הכוזרי עם פי' קול יהודה מהגאון הצדיק המפורסם חכם השלם מוה' יהודה מומקאטי ז”ל אשר זה רע”א שנים שלא נדפס עם פי' זה, ומי כמוהו מורה ביושר וכושר ביאור כל סתום בספר הכוזרי החתום, בודאי יתענגו נפשות אחב”י בראותם תפוחי זהב אמרי ספר הכוזרי במשכיות כסף נבחר לשון צדיק המוסקאטי ז”ל דבר דבור על אופניו. והשני הוא הקדוש סידור שער השמים מהגאון הקדוש אוצר החכמה והיראה בעל של”ה הקדוש ז”ל... ולאשר עתה נתפשט אצל רוב אנשי מדינותינו להתפלל בנוסח ספרד, גם כי נראה מתוך דברי המחבר השל”ה הקדוש בסידור הנ”ל שמחבב מאד את נוסח מפרד כמבואר למעיינים בו, ע”כ הרשיתי להדפיס הסידור הנ”ל גם עפ”י נוסח ספרד... והנה הגם כי רצוני למשוך ידי מתת הסכמות ובכל יכלתי אמנע עצמי מזה, אולם לגודל חביבות יקרת קדושת הספרים הנ”ל ולגודל הפצרת המוכ”ז נעתרתי לו, ויהי ה' אלהים עמו... והנני אומר בכח תוה”ק אשר חלילה להשיג את גבולו להדפיס או לקנות הספר הנ”ל ממדפיס אחר..., והשומע לדברי אלה יתברך בכל טוב בעה”י יום ב' כ”ב אדר יצמ”ח לנ”ו ישוע”ה [תרכ”ה]. כחפץ נפש המחכה לישועות כלל ישראל והרמת קרנם למעלה למעלה במהרה אברהם יעקב במוהר”ר ישראל Beneath this approbation appears the approbation of the Dayanim of Berdichev, the city of R. Sheftil. Among the signatories is “the small one, David Artinburg”, the great gaon who is none other than the author of Tehillah LeDavid.
