A segulah for protection and success In 1867 a terrible plague spread throughout the cities of Poland. The holy Gaon Rabbi Chanoch Henich of Alexander sent his disciple Rabbi Shlomo Buchvitz of Warsaw to the future Rebbe the Sfas Emes of Gur, requesting that he begin printing the novellae of his grandfather, the Chiddushei Ha-RIM: “…surely it will be a segulah for the plague to cease, when the words of a Gaon and a saint who studied Torah in its truth, in holiness and purity, are published, and of him it is said: ‘Great is Torah, for it gives life to those who practice it’…”. The Sfas Emes immediately accepted the request of the Rebbe of Alexander and began printing the writings of his grandfather, and in that very year the Responsa of the RIM were printed in Jozefów (the volume before us), “…and as soon as it appeared from the press, the plague ceased…” (Me’ir Einei Ha-Golah). Ownership: on the title pages of all three books the stamp: “Yoel son of the righteous saint, of blessed memory.” The Rebbe Rabbi Yoel Moshkovitz of Shotz, of blessed memory (1907–1980), was the youngest son of the Rebbe Rabbi Meir of Shotz, of blessed memory, and the son-in-law of his brother-in-law and cousin, the Rebbe Rabbi Shalom of Shotz–London, of blessed memory.
