Leaves 1–32, and 37 to the end of the book were apparently added from another copy on blue paper, the paper size smaller than the rest of the book. Owners: On the title page of Sefer HaChinukh, a stamp: “Yehudah Leib son of R. [cut]”. In Latin letters: RADIN. Signature: “Yehudah Leib חופ”ק” . On the first leaf of Minei Terguma: signature: “Yehudah Leib חופ”ק”. Rabbi Yehudah Leib Kaval, rabbi of Radin: The Gaon Rabbi Yehudah Leib Kaval was rabbi of Radin in the youמעקר years of the Chafetz Chaim. In 1879 he ascended to Jerusalem, where he was counted among the important rabbis, signing among the first on the proclamations of the rabbis of Jerusalem. In his approbation to “Tzir Ne’eman” (item no. 1), he signs: “Yuda Yudil Aryeh Leib son of the departed our teacher and master Ozer z.l., called here the rabbi of Radin, the undersigned Wednesday 15 of the month Kislev 1859 in the holy city of Meah Shearim.” He was indeed among the earliest settlers of the Meah Shearim neighborhood outside the walls. Upon his arrival he sent a letter to his young friend, later known as the Chafetz Chaim, expressing his impressions of the Holy Land: “In the Diaspora I did not feel the sanctity of Shabbat, and its radiant splendor I began to feel only upon my arrival in the Holy Land”… From then on the Chafetz Chaim insisted in every match arranged in his family that no one may prevent him from ascending to the Holy Land should the opportunity arise. Author of “Arei Yehudah” (Vilna 1865). He passed away on 28 Nissan 1905, and the text of his tombstone is attached. Inscriptions on the flyleaves: The front and rear flyleaves as well as the bindings are scribbled with various notes and markings, among them several inscriptions referring to known and even famous figures: “In honor of the rabbi, the preacher, the wondrous darshan, sharp, expert and fluent, y.a. our teacher the honorable Rabbi Dov Berish Flam, preacher of the holy community (Liblon) [Lublin].” Rabbi Avraham Dov Berish Flam , born in Mezeritch, was an eminent disciple of r. Akiva Eiger and the editor of the Maggid of Dubno’s works “Ohel Yaakov” and “Sefer HaMiddot” which he discovered and prepared for print. He was Maggid Meisharim in Piotrków, Sharashyn, Mezeritch, and Lublin. He passed away in 1876. Rear flyleaf: “In honor of the rabbi, the preacher, the wondrous (!) darshan, sharp, expert and fluent in the Holy Tongue, wise and understanding, outstanding in Torah, perfect in knowledge, our teacher the honorable Rabbi Avraham, preacher of the community of Lipna, under the presidency of the great rabbi our teacher Rabbi Shlomo Zvi, Av Beit Din of Drabnin and ram of the holy community of Lipna.” Rabbi Shlomo Hirsch, Av Beit Din of Drabnin , is mentioned in Responsa Yeshuot Malko §40, from Nissan 1860, and in §97 from Menachem Av 1879. He is also mentioned in Responsa Chayei HaKohen, 78b. In Kotsk there was a great chassid known as “the great Avraham”, Rabbi Avraham of Lipna, who taught the sons of the holy Rav of Kotsk. It is told that after his passing he appeared in a dream to the Avnei Nezer, asked him a question, and requested that he give him the answer so that he might quote him in the yeshivah above, for they rejoice there in his Torah. The Avnei Nezer asked him where his place in Gan Eden was, and he replied that it was as in his lifetime, in the presence of the Seraph of Kotsk… Above, in Latin letters, a long inscription, mentioning “Kohen” and “Lipneiv”, meaning Lipna. On the rear cover: “And the second preacher here in Lipna is the honorable rabbi … sharp and fluent, the scholar, the chassid and humble one, our teacher the honorable Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch, whose birthplace is the holy community of Blashki, and now he is preacher here of the holy community of Lipna.” Also on the back: “A shield to all who sign in it, Ze’ev Yaakov Segal.”
