Sefer “Nivchar MiKesef”, By R. Yeshayahu Pinto (known as “HaRif”), Aram Zovah – Sasson Press, 1869 – first edition. A dedication by the publisher to R. Yosef Uziel. - Responsa by the ordained rabbi Rabbi Yeshayahu Pinto, one of the great sages in the time of Rav Chaim Vital, author of the commentary HaRif on Ein Yaakov. The book includes exchanges of responsa with the great figures of his time: the Maharitat”z, Rabbi Eliezer ben Archa, Rabbi Chiyya HaRofeh, Maharam Gabiizon, and Rabbi Yaakov Abulafia. On the title page is printed a space to fill in to whom it is given as a gift: “This Torah as an offering… for the merit of the illumination of the eyes and the uplifting of the spirit.” This copy was given to “the eminent rabbi in Israel to be praised, the honorable Rabbi Yosef Uziel, may he be preserved.” Rabbi Yosef Uziel was the father of the Rishon LeTzion, Rabbi Ben Zion Meir Hai Uziel. Born in Jerusalem in 1829 to R. Yitzchak Chaim Uziel, of a rabbinic family. He was a rosh yeshivah, emissary, and public figure, one of the founders of the Ohel Moshe neighborhood in Jerusalem, president and head of the council of the Sephardic community, head of the shochtim and Av Beit Din of the community in the city. He stood at the head of the Perreira” Yeshivah. He raised many orphans in his home and served as their guardian. He passed away on 13 Nisan 1894 and was buried on the Mount of Olives. His eldest son from his second marriage was Rabbi Ben Zion Meir Hai Uziel, Rishon LeTzion and Sephardic Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel from 1939 until his passing.
