Exceptional Christ on the Cross, Castilian school of the 16th century, circle of Sebastián Ducete (1568 - 1619)
In polychrome wood, later cross and replaced in the 20th century. Christ measures: 95 x 86, measures 188 x 110 cm. Sebastián Ducete (1568-1619) was a Spanish sculptor, a member along with Esteban de Rueda of the so-called Escuela de Toro. Member of a family of sculptors, his initial style, highly influenced by Juan de Juni, represents a transition between Mannerism and Baroque, surpassing the Romanism of his father and grandfather. In a second phase and already in close collaboration with Esteban de Rueda, a sculptor who after beginning as a disciple of Ducete ended up associating with his teacher, his style drifted towards greater naturalism. Bibliography: "JJ Martín González, Castilian Baroque Sculpture, volume II, Madrid, Fundación Lázaro Galdiano, 1971, pp. 15-19 and 135-136". Origin: private collection of religious imagery, Spain.
