Portrait of Lady, Juan Luis Brochetón y Muguruza (San Sebastián, 1826 - Madrid, 1863), 19th century Basque school
Oil on canvas, signed. Canvas measurements: 121 x 89, framed measurements: 139 x 107 cm. A Basque portrait painter with a French father and a mother from San Sebastian, he was the first young Gipuzkoan of the century to attend the classrooms of the San Fernando Academy in Madrid (1843), where he was also a disciple of the Levantine painter Antonio Gómez Cros. In the capital of Spain he dedicated himself to portraiture and illustration in different nineteenth-century publications. He participated as a draftsman in the edition of books that collected the images and biographies of high-ranking officers of the Spanish army and European monarchs. Despite his premature death at the age of 37, he had great prestige as a portrait painter, being sought after by many families of the Basque and Cantabrian bourgeoisie. His style, influenced by that of his teachers Federico Madrazo and Antonio Esquivel, It is within the purest romantic language with elegant characters that combine the naturalism of the face with the careful study of clothing.
