This work depicts Mary Magdalene in prayer, a recurring theme in 17th century Baroque art. Mary Magdalene is commonly portrayed as a penitent figure, in solitude, reflecting on her past life. In this representation, the figure is shown with a serene and spiritual face, holding a book and with symbolic elements, such as a skull, which reinforce the idea of the transience of life. Warm tones and dramatic lighting are characteristic of Baroque painting. The oil painting is executed on canvas and has a size of 110 x 92 cm.
