Attributed to José Campeche y Jordán - Portrait of a Nobleman dressed in red
Oil on canvas. Measurements: 150 x 106 cm.
The painting depicts the portrait of a gentleman dressed in an elegant red velvet cape, holding a decorative hat in his hands. The quality of the work and the precision in the details of the fabrics stand out for their refinement and craftsmanship, elements that evoke the style of José Campeche, one of the great painters of the Caribbean in the 18th century. When compared to works such as Portrait of an Ecclesiastical Scholar from the Museo de Arte de Ponce, similarities can be observed in the treatment of folds, the rendering of the face, and the meticulous attention to detail.
The Italian influence is evident, likely due to the training Campeche received through Luis Paret y Alcázar during his exile in Puerto Rico. Paret, who had studied in Europe, introduced Campeche to engravings and art books by great Italian masters such as Guido Reni and Luca Giordano, whose style seems to have inspired this piece.
Additionally, the portrait comes from a renowned Madrid collection previously associated with other works attributed to Campeche, further strengthening the connection to the artist. For all these reasons, the technical quality, European influence, and provenance support the possibility that this portrait is a work by José Campeche.
