Giovanni Battista Langetti (Genoa, 1635 – Venice, 1676) - Philosopher - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 77 x 63 cm. Work attributed by Professor Anna Orlando. This powerful half-bust painting depicts a philosopher emerging from a dark background, in a composition typical of the dramatic style of the Tenebrosi, a Venetian movement of the Seicento influenced by Ribera and Luca Giordano. Giovanni Battista Langetti, a central figure of this movement, here combines intense realism with a chromatic richness inherited from his training with Rubens and Carlone. After training in Genoa and working in Rome with Pietro da Cortona, Langetti settled in Venice towards the end of the 1650s, where he cultivated strongly intellectual themes, especially Stoic figures such as Diogenes and Cato. This Philosopher, although unpublished, embodies his distinctive style: intensely expressive characters, bathed in a light that highlights their volume and drama, in a painting conceived not only as representation, but as an ethical statement.
