Henri Fantin-Latour (Grenoble, 1836 – Buré, 1904) - La Vérité (The Truth) - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 101 × 81 cm (unframed), 125 × 106 cm (framed). Remains of a label on the back, ”E.J. Van Wisselingh and Co., Amsterdam”. Henri Fantin-Latour (Grenoble, 1836 – Buré, 1904) was a French painter and engraver, initially trained by his father and later at the École de Dessin in Paris. His true school was the Louvre, where he studied the great Venetian masters. In 1861 he briefly studied with Courbet, although he developed a more intimate and restrained style. His friendship with James Whistler took him to England, where he achieved great success with his still lifes and floral compositions, comparable to 17th-century Dutch painting. He exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1861 and, although close to figures such as Manet, refused to join the Impressionist group. From 1870 onwards, his work became more symbolic and was influenced by the music of Schumann, Brahms, and Wagner. He died in Buré, where he had lived with his wife since the 1870s.
